I've got a little lightning bolt shaped piece of my heart missing.

And speaking of Harry Potter, they are actually going to release The Tales of Beedle the Bard later this year. We'll see how that goes.

I tried getting into those Twilight Saga books, but I found the writing to be inane and vapid, like reading a 16-year-old's livejournal. [Oh, ok, like reading this blog too.]

An Amazon user summed up book one like this:
"The whole book is basically: 'Today I went to school. Edward gave me a ride home. I couldn't speak for his amber eyes were oh so mesmerizing! When I got home I made dinner for my father and cleaned the entire house. Then I got myself into mortal danger and Edward saved me. His eyes are soooo amber and mesmerizing.'"

I was disappointed because the book was highly recommended by Emsie Hammer. But alas. Terrible. I know all the little girls are going nuts over it, but a sexy character does not equate to quality writing.

This summer I've been reading books that I'm a little embarrassed to admit I've never read. Stuff like 1984, Fahrenheit 451, and The Bell Jar. I picked up Flowers for Algernon as well, because I've only read the short story version.

I also read Cabin Pressure: One Man's Desperate Attempt to Recapture His Youth as a Camp Counselor by Josh Wolk, which I really really enjoyed. It was similar to some zines I've read, but longer, and by a guy who writes for Entertainment Weekly. I thought the flow of the chapters was great, and Wolk really wove the tale of his last "free" summer before getting married beautifully. I'd recommend it for anyone who has gone to camp, has wanted to go to camp, or who likes to read books.

I'm currently reading I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone, which I'm on the fence about. The writing has it's fair share of smiles "dancing across his lips" "slate gray eyes" and "sharp cheekbones", but the story itself is decent. Stephanie Kuehnert paints a pretty decent picture of Emily Black and her family and friends and the town they grew up in. They only thing I'm not entirely convinced of is the supposedly amazing punk rock beauty and talent of the main character. At times she is a little Mary Sue-ish, in her own punkish way. She sounds pretty bratty and stuck up, yet everyone seems to adore her and her attitude. I'm not finished yet, but I'm enjoying it despite the flaws.

Next books up: Summerland by Michael Chabon, Whitechapel Gods by S. M. Peters, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy poetry by Tao Lin, and the Apocalypse Reader edited by Justin Taylor.

Yay reading!

I think I need to remember to renew my library card.

The place where they keep all the books - I dedicate this post to you.

Mucca Pazza and the Mystical Tuba

So I was talking with my friend Angie at a show last week, as we sat at the back of the venue watching a band play. She said "remember when we used to say 'I can't imagine ever NOT being in the very front at a show?'"

We used to scoff at the "old people"- you know, the ones in their 20's- who would stand watching the band from the back, hardly rocking out. "If you love the music so much, how can you do that? How can you just stand in the back not even moving?"

Ok, so now that we are those old people, I totally get it. I mean, I don't leave the house after work on a weeknight, so staying up at a show, in Los Angeles, past 9 PM, is like really hardcore.I had to go to work the next morning. And I'd been at work all day prior. This is tough stuff.

Maria had told me about Mucca Pazza, a 30-piece marching band from Chicago, Illinois, that plays punk rock tunes. She asked me if I wanted to go see them play live.
"You had me at '30-piece marching band that plays punk rock tunes.'"

The self-proclaimed "circus punk" band members wore old marching uniforms, all in different colors from different schools. Up on stage they had an ominous Steampunk look about them, and I could imagine that their polished brass trombones were really guns and they were about to fight a war against a mechanized establishment.

All 30 members, against all odds, fit on the stage. However the performance was punctuated by a cymbal player doing rock and roll jumps off the side of the stage, crashing his cymbals as he landed, as a portion of the brass section wandered around amidst the crowd, half sneaking half proudly marching like they were in a really important competition. Oh, and did I mention the cheerleader?

It was nice to see smiling hipster faces in the crowd. People don't smile at shows anymore.

Maria and I took some photos, but my battery unfortunately died only a few shots in.
[click for bigger photos]

Find Mucca Pazza here and here.
The guy dressed all in khaki who was really really into Mucca Pazza - I dedicate this post to you.

Not Going Home

I don't usually post You Tube videos, but I can't stop listening to Sun, Sun, Sun by the Elected. I feel so safe and calmed when I'm driving home after work and I play the entire thing on repeat and Blake Sennett is just so sincere and I want to hang out and have some drinks in a small, dark bar in the middle of America and we'll talk about what's going on and then what we're having problems with and maybe even make each other feel better and then when I go to leave and he stays behind finishing up his last drink, I'll give him a long hug and pat on the back before I leave. It's going to be awesome. I hope he talks like his lyrics.

"Not Going Home" was actually my least favorite song on the album. Honestly, I used to skip it for the first year I owned it. But luckily I changed my mind.

The sincerity on his face at 2:31 breaks my heart when he looks to the left of the screen. A music video isn't supposed to make me feel this way. And then there is that little piano part that makes me leap.

His joy at the end will let you know everything's going to be ok.

I recommend the Elected's "Sun, Sun, Sun" for anyone who enjoys non-horrible music, and who also likes having drinks at the bar and Winter.

the long drive home - I dedicate this post to you.

p.s. In the song "I'll Be Your Man" these lines go "Now, I read through your poetry/yeah, every last one/felt like I ate too much butter/and drank too much rum..." and that is fantastic because that's the weird light-headed, slightly nauseated, giddy feeling you get when you really connect with something and you're pretty sure they've been reading your diary that you've hidden between the mattresses because that's exactly like how you feel and sometimes makes you cry a little, but in a good way because you're so connected to the music or the art or literature and you are just so damn happy because you have a great fella and the best friends ever, and even though not everything in life is ideal at the moment you know that everything is good and will get better. But everything's perfect in that moment at least.

p.p.s. I read in Filter magazine that he doesn't drink anymore. So I guess we can't get hang at the bar. But I hear he flies a mean kite.

Being an Adult Means Hanging Your Posters in Frames.

It looks like Chris and I are gonna be moving. Sweet. We haven't looked too much, but it needs to be close to the mountains, have air conditioning and washer/dryer hookups. It'll be awesome.

I get nervous when I get too far from the mountains.

He said we can have a craft cabinet. Which is good. My boxes of supplies are encroaching on my living space. Chris got me a 2.25" button maker for my birthday. My supplies just came in the mail. 100 more pinbacks and 50 hand mirrors. I want to make some and add them to the Etsy shop.

I'm going to miss Clay though. Even though he's a cat he's still my homie. We hang out, like, all the time. He's watching me type right now. He has no idea.

I have vacation time planned for August. I might go visit my dad in Flagstaff. But I also want to do more stuff too. Arizona would be nice. Maybe more camping than we did last time. I'm down with that.

My life needs a choreographed dance scene right about now.

A Soft Pillow for an Armadillo - I dedicate this post to you.

Saying Goodbye is Hard To Do...

...unless it's a pet fish that repulses you.

Last year for my birthday Chris got me a fishtank. We had quite a few that lasted a long time, but some died over the past 12 months, possibly due to our inexperience of running a proper tank.

Here is a normal Mickey Platy:

Here is what our looked liked before it died:

Our last Mickey was bloated and scales sticking up like he was all punk rock. Alas, he was not punk rock, but it was the dropsy. Dropsy isn't a disease, but a condition caused by a bacterial infection. It's also really really gross to look at.

This Mickey liked to hang around in our little sunken pirate boat, which was probably where all the rotting vegetation and other fun stuff got trapped. So that caused a bacterical infection, which let to the dropsical conditions.

"This disease is characterized by a swollen or hollow abdomen (Ascites). A concentration of fluid in the body tissues and cavities causes the fish's abdomen to become swollen and appear bloated. Swollen areas may exhibit a 'pine-cone' appearance caused by the fish's scales sticking out. You can best see this by viewing your fish from the top. Fish may also stop feeding, appear off-color, become listless and/or lethargic, have sunken eyes, and hang at the top or stay at the bottom of the aquarium. The condition affects the fish's internal organs, ceasing proper function."

So we noticed it last weekend, decided to separate he fish from the others. I checked on lots of fish care boards and it sounded like without antibiotics, Dropsy is usually fatal, and even with antibiotics prognosis is not good. One of the only humane ways to kill a fish is to chop it's head off, or inject it with certain medications, and I wasn't about to do that. I mean, it was a nice fish, but it only cost us like $2.00.

And this is going to sound worse, but just looking at the fish made me want to throw up. I've been through some gnarly stuff with my cats [infections and face drains and sicknesses], but this damn fish and it's dropsy made me so sick to my stomach to look at. But I couldn't stop staring it! And staring at other photos of fish with dropsy.

So for your sick viewing pleasure, I present more photos of our fish with dropsy. [click for larger photos]

There's that weird "pineconing" they were talking about. Gross.

Dropsy the fish, R.I.P.

dropsy the disease - I definitely do not dedicate this post to you.

Me and the Interwebs are Becoming One.

I've been spending too much time on my computer. Because they're wearing those weird matching velour sweatsuits and their hair is frosted blonde, and I'm not sure, but I think they were vacationing in Glamis. And that's their life. Which seems dreadfully boring. They're so average.

It's not like I'm so amazing, but I'm not too average. Maybe above average, or even a little below, but certainly not average.

Average is for the tourists. And Glamis. And velour. But not glamor and valor. That's for the unaverage.

Also, I'm reading 1984 because I never have, and I like the idea of paring down the language to "doubleplusgood".

D.I.Y. or Die!

I've got this itch in my hands to make things. But it's been in every newscast I watched tonight.

From KTLA news:

The Los Angeles City Council dropped plans Tuesday for a symbolic moratorium on killing, deciding instead to use the upcoming anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination to promote peace.

Council members had been asked by a handful of activists to declare a 40-hour ban on murder and other violence, a concept one critic quickly derided as "silliness."

After a 45-minute debate, the council reworked its resolution, saying the city's opposition to homicides should last more than a single weekend.

"A moratorium on violence and killing is something we should support 365 days a year and every minute we live," said Councilman Richard Alarcon.

The symbolic ban on homicides had been proposed by Los Angeles author and political commentator Earl Ofari Hutchinson, who had urged the city to make a bold statement about the recent spike in homicides, which are up 32 percent compared to the same period last year.

Others called the ban a hollow gesture, saying the council should focus on more substantive anti-crime proposals.

"I'm sure that the people who are doing the killing will hear that the council is calling for a moratorium and then cease and desist," said a sarcastic Joe Hicks, a former executive director of the city's Human Relations Commission. "It's more silliness from our wonderful City Council."

Councilman Tony Cardenas responded angrily, telling his colleagues that a murder moratorium is not silly at all. "That's the kind of attitude that Martin Luther King had to step over and step across to get the job done," he said.

Despite expressions of support, council members voted only for a resolution that promised to build awareness and dialogue about "the root causes of violence and killing."

That period of dialogue is scheduled to begin at 6:01 p.m. Friday, the 40th anniversary of King's death, and end at 10:01 a.m. Sunday.

My favorite line is

After a 45-minute debate, the council reworked its resolution, saying the city's opposition to homicides should last more than a single weekend.

"A moratorium on violence and killing is something we should support 365 days a year and every minute we live," said Councilman Richard Alarcon.

I personally don't support that statement, and I'm sure many other Southern Californians will agree with me. I'm reading about old bands I used to like on blogs and it makes me happy and disappointed that things aren't the same anymore.

On my drive from work I happen to look over at the lovely spot between the trees on the exact right spot on the 57 and I could see the orange sun as a perfect backdrop for Los Angeles. I swear she looked taller and more proud than I've seen her lately. Maybe the entire city hopscotched a mile or two inland and it really is closer to me. Or maybe she's happy that she got a good shower this morning. I only hope that she doesn't try to shake dry at 3 am.

So, at this precise moment, while passing that lovely spot between the trees on the exact right spot on the 57, "Los Angeles, I'm Yours" by the Decemberists randomized up on my stereo and that was a nice coincidence because I always feel like I'm in my own movie in my head and that's probably the song I would picked for this scene.

I've realized it's futile to hope for a photo of this city from this far back. Maybe Maria and I can go up on the hill next the mausoleum again and try to get a photo of the San Gabriels and Los Angeles during rush hour. It's worth a try. Being an adult is busy work though, you know.

I wish I had my own time-traveler friend from the past so I could take him around and show him all the cool things we have now, like traffic signals and cameras, and too much time on our hands. And freeways with shining cars. Since he's a brave adventurer who wears goggles and a leather coat and not a regular citizen of his time, I think he'd be amazed and not scared.

glow in the dark bracelets - I dedicate this post to you.

The Decrepitron 5000

I always forget that I'm over 18 and can do stuff without permission, you know?

Back in high school, cartilage piercings were all the rage. My bff Maria was [and remains] so rad and she had a bunch of ear piercings. I didn't even have the lobes pierced anymore so I decided I needed to go out and get something done.

Of course the local Claire's was the only place to go. I mean why would one even consider anywhere else? You mean piercings are done elsewhere without using a gun? People use needles to pierce? Blow my mind!

So I ended up with three cartilage piercings over a couple years. They never healed correctly, probably because they were done with the guns. Studio piercers have known for years that the guns pose risk, including infections and severe tissue damage. Awesome!

I work at a fairly conservative company, whose dress-code mandates something like "only one earring in each earlobe" kinda deal, so I don't have to many options for piercing placement.

That's why the Industrial piercing is awesome. It sits high up at the top of the ear, easily covered for work. And it's got a little toughness to it, but it's not too extreme if my boss or my dad sees it. [Hi dad!]

So upon recommendations from a couple people I know, as well as some favorable net reviews, I went to Laughing Buddha Piercing in Upland, California [formerly Puncture]. The guys there were really knowledgeable, and they even turned down three just-turned-16 year olds while I was there for not being with their parent or having their birth certificate. That's hardcore.

They weren't snooty or rude like some mod studios I've been to before, and also weren't out to make a quick buck [i.e. turning down the teen girls and also telling me they couldn't pierce my left ear because the ridge wasn't prominent enough].

I think it was Airick who pierced me, and I liked him because he reminded me of my friend Dan with his long beard. He stretched like he was running the 300 yard dash and that was awesome.

So this is it after a week. It gets a little angry if I hit it with my glasses or my headset at work. Plus I can't sleep on that ear, which is a major bummer. I'm pleased with it though.

The point I was originally going to make was how I feel old thinking about this stuff. In the sense of "I'm not hip to what the kids are doing." But now the kids are doing what I was doing, and if I try to explain that they're like "Whatever Grandpa Megan, let me go back to buying shirts that look like they were found at a thrift store" and I'm just like shakin' my fist and telling them to stay off my lawn.

People who sing in the shower - I dedicate this post to you.

Music:Beulah - Hey Brother

Written in the Snow

We finally made it up to Mt. Baldy today. It was warm enough that we didn't need jackets, and the sun was shining, which in my opinion makes it less than an ideal snow-faring expedition. It ended up being beautiful despite the dirty snow, the hundreds of vans full of people, and the ski lift parking attendants charging five dollars to park when it's normally free.

I wanted to give high fives to the police who were giving tickets to people not displaying their Angeles Forest adventure passes. It was awesome that the people getting tickets acted confused in spite of the fact that signs are posted every mile or so where you can buy them.

Chris said I looked butch. I know the only reason I haven't made a brilliant film is simply because I have never tried, and not because I lack the skills to do so.

Since I get 10s and 10s of readers per year, I thought this would be a great platform to show everyone my freakin' sweet Hollywood debut. Listening to infinite songs is one of the best things ever. I'm sure you can feel what I mean.

I was a little disappointed in the 2007 edition of "Best American Non-Required Reading". It's getting a little short on the non-fiction, and a little heavy on the creative political non-fiction. I'm sure you can understand what I'm getting at.

My word count for NaNoWriMo is 13,669, which is woefully under target for where I should be today. But I'm having fun with the story, and I'm not stressing it yet. I have this Friday off of work, so I'll be able to write a little catch up after taking in a little Captain and Coke maybe. Or just some refreshing Coca Cola. I bet you can see where I'm headed with that.

I have been wondering since when did Shawn Colvin start doing cover songs? She did an album of artists from Tom Waits to Gnarls Barkley, WTF? I'm sure you have been wondering the same thing.

I think we're all going to be ok, you know?

Flavored Instant Oatmeal [delicious AND nutritious] - I dedicate this post to you.

Music: I Love Japanese Hardcore - A Fine Day For Sailing [Go Sailor cover!]

Wild Nights

I almost just choked When I realized that I was already at 1,644 words for my NaNoWriMo word count of the day [even without fixing all my contractions like "don't" to make it into two words]. Score.

My sweet deal for the week was finding a 99 cent "Women of Ska" cd at Rhino. Nice. I also scored Bob the Slug in "Green and Bloody" from Kid Robot's Monger series.

I was hoping for them.

So now they are helping me write my word count. It's awesome.

Notice how optimistic I am right now. I'm sitting here listening to Beirut and feeling the Santa Ana's coming in through the door that claps shut over and over again. I got a sweet new hunting cap, and the fuzziness make me feel like a bear is constantly warming my ears with great big paws. I'm glad it's Fall.

I think the wind might just throw a tree through the front window, but that's ok by me. I got an awesome Pirates kite a couple weeks ago, but today the wind came too late to go fly it. Maybe it'll stick around.

I'm scrambling for costume ideas with Chris this weekend. We scoured a couple thrift stores for a cheap suit for him, but came up short. We did find a set of margarita glasses, and I scored a B. Lee Band CD, as well as the Presidents of the United States of America debut album, featuring the smash hits "Kitty", "Lump", and "Peaches". Two bucks each is such a sweet deal. And the "POTUSA" album reminds me of being 12 and having all the kids at my table in Mr. Vester's science class think they were getting away with something by saying "POTUSA".

FYI: I was awesome enough to actually have a Presidents of the United States of America t-shirt. That was a really good t-shirt.

Boll Weevil - I dedicate this post to you.

Music: Beirut - A Sunday Smile

"Emily, OMG, your boyfriend just walked in!"

Emily and I were totally lucky enough to spot her soulmate at the local burger joint.
